Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi today called for direct talks between the US and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Wang made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing on the sidelines of the first session of the 13th National People's Congress, answering questions on China's foreign policy and external relations.

"During the PyeongChang Winter Olmpics, the DPRK did not conduct any nuclear tests and the US suspended its military drills with South Korea," Wang said.

The "suspension for suspension" proposal put forward by China is the right way forward for the DPRK issue, Wang stressed.

Wang added that "it is time to test the sincerity" of parties involved in the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue, because every time the tension there eases, disturbing and harmful actions arise.

The global community should pay attention to who is pushing for a peaceful settlement on the nuclear issue and who is creating tension, Wang said.
