Former U.S. first lady Barbara Bush remains hospitalized

Former U.S. first lady Barbara Bush remains hospitalized in Houston for treatment of a respiratory-related ailment Thursday, a family spokesman said.

Bush family spokesman Jim McGrath on Thursday told media that Mrs. Bush is "doing great and responding well" to treatment at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

McGrath said physicians may be exercising extra caution by keeping her at the hospital.

Mrs. Bush was admitted to the hospital Monday for treatment of early signs of a respiratory-related issue, the office of former U. S. President George H.W. Bush said in a statement Tuesday.

She had been admitted to the same hospital in 2008 for treatment of a perforated ulcer, returning in 2010 for routine testing, according to reports.

Mrs. Bush is the wife of George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president, and mother of George W. Bush, the 43rd. She is one of only two women to be both the wife and mother of U.S. presidents. The other is Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams, the second U.S. president, and mother of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president.

The Bush couple now live in Houston.
