The upcoming presidential election in Indonesia might have to go through multiple rounds as no single hopeful is expected to gain dominancewith record-breaking growth of swing voters, according to a recent survey.

The survey carried out by prominent polling survey agency, Indonesia Survey Circle (LSI), indicated rapid growth rate of potential voters who have not set their minds in choosing certain presidential candidates, or popularly known as swing voters.

"The rate of swing voters has increased very high, above 40 percent. It was far higher than in 2009 presidential election that reached below 20 percent," LSI researcher Adjie Alfaraby said in LSI office here on Tuesday.

The results of the survey carried out from May 1 to 9 in 33 provinces across the country showed the rate of swing voters for the upcoming presidential election stood at 41.76 percent, Adjie said.

According to Adjie, the increasing rate of swing voters was caused by massive and intense negative campaign launched by supporters of presidential candidates in tarnishing the images of their opponent candidates in public.

"It makes the potential voters in doubts on candidates they already picked up in the first place," Adjie said.

Based on the survey results, LSI learned that no single presidential hopeful would gain dominating votes in the July 9 election.

The LSI survey results, however, said that president candidate from Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Joko Widodo was still favored to win the election as he still has high electability rate compared to the other candidates.

"But his electability rate was far below 50 percent. Not like it was in 2009 when President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono gained above 50 percent," Adjie added.

Joko Widodo with his running mate only gained 25 to 26 percent of electability rate, slightly higher than his rival from Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra) Party, Prabowo Subianto, who gained around 17 percent, according to the survey.
