A health expert Friday called on Chinese nationals working or studying overseas to step up their prevention measures against the novel coronavirus and avoid nonessential trips to reduce the risk of infection.

Self-protection measures such as observing good hand hygiene, wearing masks and practicing social distancing are the key to avoiding being infected, said Feng Luzhao, a researcher with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, at a press conference.

Feng also urged overseas Chinese nationals to avoid nonessential trips and closely follow epidemic situations.

Mi Feng, a spokesperson for the National Health Commission (NHC), said the NHC has set up a special section on its official website for overseas Chinese nationals to seek health knowledge and help amid the virus outbreak.
