A man is lucky to be alive after his car ploughed through a fence and plummeted more than 30 meters over a Sydney cliff on Monday.

Police said local residents heard the driver calling for help from the bottom of the cliff just after 7:30 a.m. local time.

A rescue helicopter rushed to the scene and winched the driver to safety, police said.

"Officers from Eastern Beaches Local Area Command and police rescue have attended and found a car on the rock platform at the bottom of the cliff," a police statement said.

"The driver, a man, was out of the car and is currently being assessed by New South Wales Ambulance Paramedics." Enditem
