Singin' in the rain: Grandma unclogs drain after northern China downpour

A video of an elderly Chinese lady cleaning out a drainage inlet by hand after heavy rain in the city of Changzhi in northern China's Shanxi Province has gone viral.

Web users praised the 79-year-old Niu Renjiao's efforts to ease flooding in her city in her own small way after torrential rain hit Changzhi on June 30.

Liu Meiying was touched after recording the lady’s good deed.

A passerby named Liu Meiying recorded what Niu was doing and posted it on social media.

Later Liu and her husband gave Niu a hand when she couldn’t get back on her feet by herself after a prolonged length of time working.

Liu said she was touched by Niu’s community-minded deed.

Web users have called Niu a "warm-hearted granny" after watching the video, which has been viewed more than 1.6 million times.

Niu said she never expected her actions would attract so much public attention.

What she did was simple and small and was her civic duty, she added.
