India: Fire in Mumbai kills 14

NEW DELHI, Dec. 30 (APD) - A major fire broke out at a building in Mumbai's Kamala Mills Compound on Thursday, killing 14 and injuring 21 people.

The fire is believed to have started at around 12.30 a.m. at a rooftop restaurant in The Kamla Trade House, and spread to adjoining pub and restaurant.

More than 12 fire tenders were required to extinguish the fire, which was extinguished only by 6.30 a.m.

The managers of the pub, Hratesh Sanghvi, Jigar Sanghvi and Abhijeet Manka , where the fire started have been booked by the police for the mishap.

According to reports, most of those who died were women in 20s and early 30s.

More than 150 people were present at the top floor of the building when the fire started.

The area where fire broke out is congested with over 36 restaurants, along with many shops and corporate offices.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences through social media. He tweeted, “Anguished by the fire in Mumbai. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. I pray that those injured recover quickly.”

Through twitter, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis said, "Disturbing to know about the loss of lives in unfortunate Kamala Mills fire incident in Mumbai. My thoughts are with the families who lost their loved ones and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

He further promised that in-depth enquiry of the incident will be conduced.
