The Board of Control for Cricket in India has nominated MS Dhoni for the Padma Bhushan award, acting president CK Khanna confirmed on Wednesday (September 20). Dhoni, who is already a recipient of Arjuna Award, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and the Padma Shri Award, could become the 11th cricketer to receive the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award.

"Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been nominated by the BCCI for the Padma Bhushan award," Khanna said. "It was a unanimous decision by the members. He has been one of the greatest names in contemporary cricket and the most appropriate choice of the Indian cricket board."

Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the best captains in the history of Indian cricket. Under his leadership, India won the inaugural World T20 in 2007, clinched their second ODI World Cup in 2011 and went on to win the Champions Trophy in 2013. In Tests, India reached the top spot in the rankings when he was at the helm.

Having already retired from the longer format, Dhoni gave up the limited-overs captaincy and continues to be the first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman in both the ODI and the T20I side. He is currently only 263 runs short of becoming only the fourth Indian batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid to reach 10000 runs in the 50-over format.

"He is one of our greatest ODI cricketers with nearly 10,000 runs in ODIs. Not many players have played 90 Test matches. There is no one better than him, who could have been nominated," Khanna further stated.
