Film director Paul Greengrass, responsible for "The Bourne Supremacy" and the "The Bourne Ultimatum", was named Monday as the winner of this year's Variety Award by the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).

In addition to directing films in the Bourne franchise, Greengrass, aged 58 and born in Britain, has been nominated for best director for his work on the film "United 93", a 2006 film about the events behind the crashing of one of the planes hijacked by terrorists on 9/11.

The Variety Award each year recognizes an actor, director, writer or producer who has helped to focus the international spotlight on British films. Previous winners include Dame Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, and Daniel Craig.

Greengrass began his career as a TV journalist, directing on the prestigious current affairs program "World In Action" in the 1980s before moving on to script writing and directing films.

He specializes in filming subjects based on real life events.

His film in 2002 "Bloody Sunday", which portrayed the events around the shooting and killing of 14 protesters in the Northern Ireland city of Derry by the British Army, won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Greengrass will receive the award at the BIFA annual awards ceremony held in central London on December 8.
