Singapore's humanitarian NGO Mercy Relief has distributed over 10 tonnes of food supply with Myanmar Heart Development Organization (MHDO) to flood-ravaged Rakhine State in Myanmar, the organization said on Wednesday.

The food pack, including rice, cooking oil, canned fish, salt and noodles, has been distributed to 350 households in Kyawtaw Township of Rakhine State. The food pack will be able to feed a family of six for a period of two weeks, Mercy Relief said.

"Reports from Mercy Relief's ground team indicate that a number of houses and schools were completely destroyed, river banks were significantly widened and many trees uprooted. At one point, water levels scaled up to a menacing 10-feet high. Access to clean water is a growing issue as most lakes and rivers have been contaminated, " it said.

The flood, triggered by heavy rainfall since June, has affected 13 regions and states in Myanmar, destroying houses, farmland, railway lines, bridges and roads.

The organization also said that communities in the Rakhine State also face a possible food crisis for staples such as rice, as this year's harvest has been destroyed by the recent floods.

Mercy Relief has launched a public fundraising appeal for its aid efforts to the flood hit communities in Myanmar, with the campaign running till the end of September this year.

In the meantime, Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has also launched a month-long appeal for funds to aid communities affected by widespread floods in Myanmar on Tuesday.
