More people are moving across state lines, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Many are moving to and from highly populated and neighboring states.

Nearly 7.9 million people in the United States moved between states in 2021, an increase from almost 7.4 million people in 2019, U.S. Census data indicates.

While the COVID-19 pandemic may have influenced changes in U.S. internal migration patterns, PODS Moving & Storage points out, these trends are continuing in 2023.

According to their data, southern states have seen some of the highest number of move-ins.

And while Florida is seeing a high volume of new residents, California has been seeing a high number of people moving out of the state.

Take a look at the top three states where people are leaving and the top three states people are moving to.

Highly-populated states, including California, Texas and Florida, experienced some of the largest state-to-state flows, according to the Census Bureau. Most are moving to neighboring states or staying in the same region.

While moving trends appear to be staying strong in 2023, analysts say inflation and rising rental and housing costs are variables to watch. Although some costs have dipped over the last year, costs of living remain high for many people.
