What Kamala Harris means to the political landscape

U.S. Senator Kamala Harris was picked as vice-presidential running mate to Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

The decision is being hailed as historic and groundbreaking. Harris becomes the first Black woman and first person of Indian descent on a major U.S. party ticket.

The Democratic Party hopes to attract more women and minority voters, who will be crucial to the upcoming elections in November.

According to a survey, more than 120 Black or multi-racial Black women are running for congressional seats in 2020.

The Center for American Women and Politics, a part of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University notes that out of the 127 women currently serving in the U.S. Congress, 48, or 37.8% are women of color.
