Two persons were killed and seven others injured on Friday in a road crash involving a cab and a lorry in the area called Welikanda in eastern Sri Lanka, local police said.

The police said the accident occurred on the main highway linked to the eastern city Batticaloa.

Road crashes claim as many as 3000 lives for a year in Sri Lanka.

Chairman of the Sri Lankan National Council for Road Safety Sisira Kodagoda said accidents were mostly recorded in the months of April and December every year in Sri Lanka.

"These are festive months. In April, people celebrate Sinhala New Year. In December, there is the Christmas. Vehicular movement increases on roads during these months leading to more accidents," he said.

He said 436 people have died up to March this year in road crashes.

"One third of them was caused by accidents involving motorbikes. Drunken driving is the main cause for the accidents," he said.
