Being a royal is by no means a normal life. But Kate and William are doing their best to make Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s lives as un-royal as possible.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will accompany Prince George on his first day of school next week.

On Thursday 7 September, the royal couple will play the role of all other parents and drop the little prince off at Thomas’s in Battersea.

The private day school was an unexpected choice for Prince George (although it is still mega-expensive, costing £18,000 a year). However, Kate and William both believed in the school’s ethos of kindness.

The couple are following in the footsteps of Princess Diana who broke decades of royal protocol when she decided to send William to a ‘normal’ pre-school and when she scared royal advisors by insisting on taking him to school herself.

“[William] became the first heir to the British throne to begin his schooling outside of a palace,” Newsweek reported in 1985.

“The decision to have William, 3, develop his finger-painting skills among commoners showed the influence of Diana, Princess of Wales, who had worked in a nursery school herself.”

Kate and William made a similar choice, sending Prince George to a local pre-school in their previous home of Norfolk.

Next week may not be the last we see of the Duchess at the school gates as she is reportedly keen to accompany four-year-old George as often as possible.
