WithHongKong’srapidlyagingpopulation,theelderlyarefacinguniquefinancialchallengesinretirementwhilecopingwithdiseasesanddisabilities.
Agroupof681elderlyweresurveyed,covering15elderlyservicecentersinHongKong.Thesurveyshowedthataround40percentofrespondentsdonothavelong-termfinancialgoals.Amongthosefacingfinancialdifficulties,morethanhalfonlyfocusonreducingexpensesand20percentwillborrowmoney.
Lackoffinancialknowledgeamongtheelderlyisalsoreflectedinthesurvey,withnearlyhalfpreferringtospendratherthansaveforthefutureandunawareofriskswheninvesting.
Planningforretirementneedstobeemphasizedamongtheelderly.About90percenthavenoideaoftheirlivingexpensesafterretirementandmanyrelyongovernmentwelfareandfamilysupporttopayfortheirretirementlife.

OneoftherecommendationsoftheKuk’sresearchistoprovidefinancialtrainingprogramsforsocialworkerstogivebasicfinancialadvicetoseniors,helpingthosewithdifficultiesindailylife.
Oneelderlypersonsurveyedintheproject,AuYeungFung-chee,saidherinterestinfinancialplanningandhersenseofsafetyhadincreasedbecauseshehasbecomemoreawareofherabilitytosavemoneyduringtheproject.Anothersurveyedsenior,ChowFung-sin,agreedthatitwasimportantfortheelderlytodevelopthehabitofsavingmoneyonadailybasis.
Centre-in-ChargeofPoLeungKuk’sLifePlanningandFinancialEducationCentreRayChongsaidthegroupwouldexpanditsfinancialeducationworkfortheelderlytomoreplaces,inthehopeofraisingseniorcitizens’awarenessoffinancialplanning.Theywillcooperatewithdifferentcentersandsocialworkerstohelptheelderlyinfinancialeducation.
