Several explosions were heard in the vicinity of Israel's southern city of Eilat, an Israeli police spokesperson told Xinhua on Monday.

According to Police Spokesperson Mickey Rosenfeld, the police received calls from citizens who heard explosions in the area. " Police and military forces are scanning the area," he said, adding there were no reports on injuries, damage, or any evidence of missile remnants.

The spokesperson for the military said that Israeli soldiers are looking for remains of rockets which might have been fired at the southern city.

In last August, the Iron Dome anti-missile battery successfully intercepted a rocket launched toward Eilat, without causing damage or injuries.

Two rockets were fired toward Eilat in April 2013, slightly damaging a residential building. Gazan militants have fired rockets and mortars at southern Israel on many occasions, leading Israeli officials to continually revamp their defense systems.

The Israeli military believes that the rockets were fired by extremist militants situated in the Sinai Peninsula, affiliated with al-Qaida.
