BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WASHINGTON -- The COVID-19 death toll in the United States rose by 1,015 in the past 24 hours, the lowest one-day figure in a month, data compiled by Johns Hopkins University showed on Monday.

The Baltimore-based university had registered more than 1.17 million cases in the country as of 0030 GMT Tuesday, with 68,689 deaths.

KAMPALA -- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Monday warned against domestic violence among families amid COVID-19 lockdown in the country.

Museveni in a televised address said husbands and wives must learn to live together and avoid domestic violence during the extended nationwide shutdown in the East African country.

CAPE TOWN -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Africa was 7,220 as of Monday, up by 437 from the previous day, said Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

"Regrettably, we report seven more COVID-19 related deaths -- six from Western Cape and one from KwaZulu-Natal," which brought to 138 the total deaths nationwide, Mkhize said.

LOS ANGELES -- California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Monday that the most populous U.S. state will enter into the second stage of COVID-19 recovery at the end of this week, allowing some retail businesses to reopen with modifications.

"We are entering into the next phase this week, end of the week. With modifications, we will allow retail to start operating across the spectrum," said Newsom at a daily press briefing.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico reported 1,434 new COVID-19 cases and 117 more deaths during the last 24 hours, bringing the total in the country to 24,905 cases and 2,271 deaths, the country's health ministry said on Monday.

Hugo Lopez-Gatell, Mexico's deputy health minister, said last week that the peak of the COVID-19 epidemic in Mexico is expected on May 6 and there are 191 more suspected COVID-19 fatalities awaiting verification.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Tuesday that no new domestically transmitted cases of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) were reported on the Chinese mainland for Monday.

One confirmed case arriving from overseas was reported in Shanghai Monday, the National Health Commission said in its daily report Tuesday.
