Modi announces $312 mln relief package for NE India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced 312 million dollars in aid for the country's flood-damaged northeastern states. Modi visited Assam on Tuesday to attend a high-level meeting and review ongoing relief work in the region.

The death toll from floods and torrential rains has surpassed 80 people, and over 2 million people have been displaced. Meanwhile, over 200 people have died from floods in India's western state of Gujarat.

After inspecting the state's flood-affected areas last week, Modi also announced a relief package of 78 million US dollars for the state.

Rains have been 4 percent above average since the four-month monsoon season began in June, according to the state-run India Meteorological Department.

Modi said relief efforts were being carried out on an "extensive scale" with camps set up for the displaced and search and rescue teams deployed, according to the Reuters.
