At least one person has been killed and seven others were injured in a road accident near the Indian capital, police said Sunday.

"The accident occurred late Saturday night in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad city, barely 30 km from Delhi, when a speeding car ploughs into a group of 15 people," a senior police official said.

The victims were on their way to attend the Hindu festival of Dussehra when the incident took place, he said.

While one person died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious. "Two injured persons are battling for their lives at the hospital," the official said.

Cops said that the driver of the car was drunk and lost control of the speeding car, leading to the accident.

"The driver has been arrested and his licence seized. The vehicle has also been impounded," the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.
