COVID-19 deaths in Turkey exceed 2,000; Iran sees slowdown in new infections

The death toll of COVID-19 in Turkey surged to 2,017 on Sunday, with 86,306 confirmed cases. Meanwhile, Iran sees a slowdown in the number of new infections and fatalities in the country.

Turkey said that 3,977 new COVID-19 cases and 127 more deaths were confirmed on Sunday.

A total of 11,976 patients have recovered from COVID-19, since Turkey reported the first case in the country on March 11.

Although the number of COVID-19 cases continues increasing in Turkey, the country maintains a low mortality rate which health officials attributed to the pro-active approach to fighting the disease.

Turkey is among the top 10 countries in the world when it comes to the number of confirmed cases.

In Iran, 1,343 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total number to 82,211. And 87 more died, increasing the death toll to 5,118.

The number of recoveries has reached 57,023, and 3,456 are still in critical condition and under treatment in Iran.

Iran's capital Tehran was allowed to resume low-risk businesses on Saturday, a week after similar deregulations were adopted in other parts of the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move came as per a "smart distancing plan," whereby Iran loosened quarantine regulations and allowed the re-opening of businesses with lower risk indices.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 in Israel has risen overnight from 164 to 171, the health ministry said Sunday.

In addition, since Saturday evening, 97 new coronavirus cases have been added, bringing the total number in Israel to 13,362.

Israel registered a total of 13,491 confirmed cases and 172 deaths.

The Israeli government agreed to ease economic restrictions as well as the closure, doubling the proportion of returned workers from 15 percent to 30 percent.

In addition, stores selling electronics, furniture, laundry, home appliances and others may re-open under rules of hygiene and social distancing.

The total cases of the novel coronavirus in Saudi Arabia increased to 9,362 on Sunday with the registration of 1,088 new infections.

Around 82 percent of the new cases are not Saudi citizens.

The United Arab Emirates announced 479 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number in the country to 6,781. The new cases of many nationalities are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

Qatar's Health Ministry announced 440 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, increasing the total infections in the Gulf state to 5,448.

Egypt recorded 112 new COVID-19 infections and 15 deaths, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 3,144 in the country. The death toll in the country increased to 239.

Over the past month, Egypt has temporarily suspended schools and universities, halted flights, cancelled sports activities, closed entertainment places and malls, stopped mass prayers and shut down museums and archeological sites to combat the virus.

A total of 170 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Morocco, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country to 2,885.

A total of 141 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported while 327 patients have recovered in Morocco.

Algeria reported 95 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total infections to 2,629. The death toll reached 375.

Kuwait reported one more death and 164 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total infections to 1,915 and death toll to seven.

It also launched a repatriation plan to bring home its citizens stranded abroad due to the coronavirus pandemic. There are about 50,000 Kuwaiti citizens abroad.

In Iraq, 26 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of infections to 1,539 in the country. So far, 82 patients have died from the disease while 1,009 others recovered.

To help Iraq cope with the coronavirus spread, a Chinese team of seven experts has been working with their Iraqi counterparts since March 7.

Oman announced Sunday 86 new confirmed cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of cases in the country to 1,266.

With a new case and a death, a total of 39 infections have so far been recorded in Syria, with five recoveries and three deaths, according to the ministry.

Syria's Health Ministry said it had designated 19 isolation centers as well as 14 medical facilities to deal with the suspected cases across the country.
