Dragon boat race goes on show in Stanley in celebration of Duanwu Festival

The 46th Stanley International Dragon Boat Championship kicked off on Thursday. Over 240 local and overseas teams with approximately 5,000 paddlers fought for the championship of the contest in celebration for the Duan Wu Festival.

Now in its 46th year, the International Dragon Boat Championship is the world’s largest one-day dragon boat event, as well as one of Hong Kong’s largest and longest-running sports events.

Alongside the dragon boat race, participating teams with the catchiest costumes was granted "The Most-Outstanding-Outfit Teams".

In order to expand the influence of the event, Stanley Residents Association had developed a Facebook page named “Sun Shine Fun Time, where spectators and participants could upload and share photos on the day of the competition.

Alson Wong, Chairman of the Stanley Residents Association, said he was thrilled by the success of the event this year. "Thanks to the the Dragon Boat championship, Stanley was selected as one of ‘The World Top Ten City Beach’ in 2013. The number of international participants and enterprises’ team is also increasing.

A member of a participating team Sun Life Dragon Synergy said he had taken part in the race for 28 years since he was a university student. Although the team did not finish with a satisfactory position in the race, he was still happy to keep himself fit with the sport, and share the joy of team cohesion with his colleagues on the boat.
