A candidate running for a local position in the town of Banisilan in the southern Philippine province of North Cotabato was killed by unidentified gunmen Sunday night, police confirmed on Monday.

Provincial Police Commander Senior Superintendent Danilo Peralta identified the victim as Omar Gapor, a candidate of the United Nationalist Alliance party for councilor.

Peralta said Gapor was attacked by one of two assailants after campaigning at the town proper.

"He was preparing to leave the venue when a gunman approached and shot him," said Peralta.

Police said Gapor sustained gunshot wounds at the back of his head and died on the spot.

Authorities are now investigating the possibility that the assassination was politically-motivated.

The incident took place just a few days after 13 people were killed when armed men ambushed a convoy of mayoral candidate Abdul Malik Manamparan of Nunungan in Lanao del Norte.
