The National Police of Colombia confirmed Tuesday that a Blackhawk helicopter crashed in a jungle area located in the northern Antioquia department due to a mechanical failure, killing 15 policemen on board.

"The International committee of the Red Cross regrets to inform that as a result of this incident, 15 policemen were killed and two others were injured," a statement released said.

Police regretted the death of the 15 policemen and reported that the two wounded officers are being treated at a local hospital in Apartado city.

The police officers were part of a special operation appointed to tackle down criminal gangs operating in the area, including the most feared "Usaga Clan", when the helicopter crashed into land. Authorities have not yet ruled out the possibility that the helicopter could have been knocked down, according to Colombia's El Tiempo daily news.

"The National Police expresses heartfelt condolences to the families of these brave men who gave their lives fighting organized crime, and offers a permanent accompaniment to overcome this difficult time," the statement said.

Specialized units of the police force have traveled to the area to launch further investigations. According to preliminary information, the tragic accident might have been caused by a mechanical failure. Enditem
