China to ban more drivers from car-hailing apps

Chinahasplacedabanonunqualifiedandunlawfuldriversworkingforcar-hailingapps,includingex-convictswhoservedtimefordrug-relatedcrimes,robberyandserioustrafficviolations,ChinaNewsService(CNS)reported.

Fugitives,aswellasthosewhohavecommittedcrimesthatjeopardizednationalsecurityorrestrictedothers’personalfreedoms,wouldalsobeforbiddenfromregisteringasdriversfortheapps.

TheblacklistwasissuedonMondaybytheInternetSocietyofChinatogetherwithDidiChuxing,aChinesecar-hailingappindustrygiant.DidiChuxingisalsoconsideringincreasedrestrictionsondriverswhohavementalillnessesandthosewithmoreminortrafficviolations,CNSreported.

TrafficauthoritiesinShenzhenhavemetwithrepresentativesfromseveralcar-hailingappcompaniestodiscussthefeasibilityofbarringmorehigh-riskdriversfromregisteringwiththeapps.Thiscomesinthewakeofanumberofscandalsthathaveattractednegativeattentiontotherisingindustry.Forinstance,severalfemalecustomersweresexuallyassaultedduringtheirrespectiverides.

Manynetizenshavealsocomplainedaboutthevariedqualityofdriversondifferentcar-hailingapps.
