Iran unveils a ballistic missile with range of 2,000 km

Iran unveiled on Friday a new ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kilometers which is capable of carrying several warheads, the country's Tasnim News Agency has reported.

The latest "Khorramshahr" ballistic missile, which could carry a warhead for 1,800 kilometers, was exhibited during a military parade by the Iranian Armed Forces in Tehran commemorating the 1980s Iran-Iraq war.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, speaking during the event, said that his country "will strengthen our defense and military capabilities ... whether you want it or not," according to AFP.

His remarks could be seen as a direct response to US President Donald Trump's speech at the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

In his address, Trump slammed Tehran as a "corrupt dictatorship" and repeated his criticism to the 2015 nuclear deal struck under former President Barack Obama's tenure.

Tasnim's report also quoted the head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace division, Amirali Hajizadeh, as saying that the missile is considered a "new achievement" and that training has begun on the projectile, which he said will "be used by the aerospace forces."
