New Zealand athletes marvel in Indonesia’s Bintan IRONMAN 70.3 champions

JAKARTA, Aug. 21 (APD) – Two New Zealand athletes Mike Philips and Amelia Watkinson won IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon championship for men and women categories in the event held in Indonesia’s western resort island of Bintan.

The two New Zealanders booked the fastest time records of 3 hours 54 minutes and 4 hours 20 minutes respectively for overall competitions featured in the competition, consisted of swimming, cycling and running, in the two respective groups of the championship held in Bintan’s Lagoi Bay on Sunday.

Through their victories, the two entitled to get total rewards of 1,500 U.S. Dollars and incentives to take part in the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 championship slated to be held in South Africa’s Nelson Mandela Bay.

“Thank you for Indonesia which has been a wonderful host with its beautiful natural sceneries,” Metasport CEO Nathalie Marquet said in her remarks in the rewards handover ceremony.

Metasport is the organizer of IRONMAN 70.3 international sport event.

Over 1,200 athletes, of which around 80 percent of them were foreigners from 52 countries, took part in the IRONMAN 70.3 Bintan competition.

The athletes were obliged to swim as long as 1.9 kilometers to start the sports event, followed with cycling that took 90 kilometers of distance.

The cycling route was similar with the one held last year here, earned a title of “The Best Long Course” in Asia by prominent website for Triathlon enthusiasts AsiaTri.

The last part of the competition was running, passed through 21 kilometer of track with beautiful natural scenery along the way.

Prior to the main event for professional athletes, the IRONMAN 70.3 version for children was also held on Saturday, called IRONKIDS, but only competing 1.5 kilometer run for children aged between 6 to 12 years old. Some 300 children took part in the run.
