The number of hotels in Cambodia reached 480 as of 2013, up 1 percent year on year, with that of guesthouses up 3 percent to 1,330, the Ministry of Tourism said in a report on Saturday.

Most of the hotels and guesthouses are operated at tourism destinations in capital Phnom Penh, Siem Reap cultural province, and Preah Sihanouk coastal province, the report said.

It also said there were 613 tour and travel companies as of last year, up 5 percent year on year.

Ang Kim Eang, president of Cambodia Association of Travel Agents, which represents more than 200 tour and travel companies, said the increasing number of hotels, guesthouses and travel agents clearly reflected the improvement in the tourism industry.

"However, more same businesses will bring tougher competition among operators," he said.

Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting the Cambodian economy. Last year, the sector received 4.2 million foreign tourists, earning 2.5 billion U.S. dollars, Tourism Minister Thong Khon said Wednesday, adding that the sector created 400,000 direct jobs.

The Southeast Asian nation is well-known for its two world heritage sites. One is the 12th century Angkor Wat Temple in Siem Reap province and the other is the 11th century Preah Vihear Temple in Preah Vihear province.

Besides, it has a pristine coastline, which is one of the world 's most beautiful bays, stretching over 450 km in four southwestern provinces of Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Kep and Koh Kong.
