At least 25 people were killed and 11 others were injured in a coach accident that occurred Sunday evening in southern Italy, local media reported.

The accident happened at around 08:30 p.m. (1830 GMT) near the city of Avellino in southern Campania region, when a bus with 48 tourists onboard crashed through the guard rail falling nearly 30 meters down the hill.

According to local newspaper Il Mattino, the bus swerved to avoid hitting a truck and then invested some cars before violently impacting the guard rail.

At least 25 trapped passengers were killed, including some children, while 11 others were injured - a few seriously - and were being treated at a local hospital.

"The victims presently ascertained are 25 but there may be several more," a local police official, Giuseppe Salomone, was quoted as saying by state television Rai.

He said the reason for the fatal accident was still unclear, and investigations into the cause were still underway. Dozens of firefighters and medical teams were deployed at the scene for rescue operations.

A photographer of the Italian news agency ANSA was earlier quoted as saying that he saw about 30 bodies covered by white sheets at the scene.
