El Salvador has established new diplomatic relations with Beijing, breaking ties with Taiwan.
President
Sanchez Salem announced the formal establishment of diplomatic
relations with China on the evening of the 20th local time, "breaking
off diplomatic relations" with Taiwan. The news was announced on the
Presidents Twitter account.
The announcement was confirmed by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday morning.
Chinese government has also confirmed that it has established formal relations with El Salvador.
The
communique was signed by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister
Wang Yi and Salvadorean Foreign Minister Carlos Castaneda.
The
Central American republic is the fifth to cut diplomatic links with
Taiwan, leaving the island with only 17 countries that formally
recognize it.
