Monsterous typhoon steers off HK

The reportedly strongest typhoon of the year Usagi left Hong Kong shortly after plaquing the city for less than 24 hours, and heading towards eastern China.

The typhoon hit Hong Kong over the last weekend, but veered away at the last minute.

The Hong Kong Observatory undid the typhoon signal No. 8, after issuing for less than 20 hours, which is much shorter than expected.

Usagi was previously boasted as the "monsterous typhoon", which should be rated as with typhoon signal No. 15, going far beyond the highest level of typhoon No. 10.

As the typhoon made landfall near the city of Shanwei in the Chinese province of Guangdong, two people died after they were hit by a fallen tree.

Authorities in Guangdong initiated an emergency response plan for the Daya Bay nuclear power station - located northeast of Hong Kong - as Usagi approached, ordering four of six reactors to operate at a reduced load, the agency said.
