At least nine people were killed and others were missing after torrential rains struck the Italian island of Sardinia on Monday, Rai state television reported.

Among the victims were a mother and her daughter who were found dead inside their car which was swept away by the water near the island's northern city of Olbia.

Another man died following the collapse of a nearby bridge, while an elderly woman was found dead in her flooded home.

Other people were reported as missing, including a father and his son who were swept away by a swollen river, according to some eyewitnesses.

Major traffic disruptions caused by floods and landslides delayed flights and trains in several areas, ANSA news agency said.

Ferries between mainland Italy and the ports of Sardinia were also delayed. Winds blew at speeds up to 100 km per hour in the island.
