Since a federal appeals court on Friday afternoon lifted a stay and allowed same-sex weddings to resume in California, hundreds of gay couples applied online for licenses.

Some of the couples have already held their wedding ceremonies Friday and early Monday right after getting the licenses.

More than 500 couples completed online marriage license applications since 4:00 p.m. local time Friday (GMT0000 Saturday) when the court's decision was announced, according to Los Angeles County registrar-recorder and county clerk Dean Logan. A long line of people showed up at the start of business of his office Monday.

In San Francisco, city officials have issued over 560 licenses for same-sex marriages since Friday afternoon.

On Friday, soon after the ban was lifted, Attorney General Kamala Harris presided over at the San Francisco City Hall wedding of Kris Perry and Sandy Stier. About 90 minutes later, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo got married at Los Angeles City Hall with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa presiding over. Both couples are same-sex.

In West Hollywood, members of the City Council and other officials were temporarily deputized to perform same-sex marriages on Monday. The officials plan to preside over ceremonies from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the council chamber at the West Hollywood Library. The city was even providing a free shuttle between the council chamber and the county Registrar-Recorder's office in Beverly Hills so people could obtain licenses.

In Long Beach, Mayor Bob Foster plans to preside over a same-sex ceremony at Harvey Milk Park.

The decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals came two days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that proponents of Proposition 8 -- which banned same-sex marriages in California -- did not have legal standing to appeal a federal judge's ruling that the measure was unconstitutional.

To serve same-sex couples anxious to wed, the main Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's Office in Norwalk will remain open until 7:00 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.
