An index calculating the fears of German citizens fell by two percentage points to 39 percent, the lowest level in 20 years, according to a study published Thursday.

The results of a representative study showed 41 percent of respondents were worried about a worsening economic situation, representing a nine-percentage-point drop compared to a year ago and the lowest level in more than 20 years.

Meanwhile, unemployment fears also reached a record low with one in three admitted it was a concern.

Fear of natural disasters, terrorism and the need for long-term care at old age also decreased, according to the study.

Fears of rising costs of living and serious illness are among the most common anxieties in Germany, said the study.

German insurer R+V interviewed about 2,400 people for the study.
