Myanmar voices full support for establishing ASEAN Community

Myanmar has voiced full support for establishing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Community in line with the motto "Our People, Our Future Together" set for commemorating this year's ASEAN Day on Thursday.

During the commemorative ceremony held in Nay Pyi Taw to mark the 46th anniversary of the founding of the ASEAN, Myanmar Vice President Dr. Sai Mauk Kham said that taking over the 2014 ASEAN Chairmanship is to show the accountability of Myanmar as a member of ASEAN.

"It is a golden opportunity for showing off the leadership capability of Myanmar to the world and the nation would win the confidence of the international community after discharging the duty of ASEAN chairmanship," he said.

He urged Myanmar people to participate in the establishment of the ASEAN Community.

In his message to the ASEAN Day, Myanmar President U Thein Sein said his country will be taking the leadership role of ASEAN in 2014 in gaining the momentum of ASEAN development, in fulfilling the 2015 ASEAN Community targets and in laying down the ASEAN Vision beyond 2015.

He noted that political, economic and social reforms in Myanmar have given the country more opportunities in enhancing the integration with ASEAN member states in the ASEAN Community.

The people-centered democracy in Myanmar, which is in line with the ASEAN Charter, has facilitated the country's economic development and accordingly helped improvesocial status of its people, he said, adding that Myanmar's efforts to implement the ASEAN Community Blueprints have positive effects on the country's political, economic and social objectives.

He stressed the importance of Myanmar people's willingness in participating in the process of striving for a modern and developed nation and in achieving the goals of ASEAN Community.

He called on ASEAN member states to cooperate with each other, saying that Myanmar is committed to contributing to ASEAN Community by serving as a bridge between the bloc and its dialogue partners.

He vowed to assume the 2014 ASEAN Chairmanship by ensuring the centrality of ASEAN,obtaining ASEAN consensus and representing ASEAN in strengthening and promoting closer relations with its partners.

With support of ASEAN member states and its dialogue partners, the president voiced Myanmar's determination to undertake successfully the role of chairmanship for the first time since it joined the regional grouping in 1997.

ASEAN adopted its Vision-2020 in 1997 and is striving for establishing ASEAN Community in 2015. ASEAN is playing a leading role not only for regional integration but also for East Asia Summit, ASEAN+3 Summit, ASEAN Regional Forum and ASEAN Defense Ministers Meeting.
