South Korean President Moon Jae-in vowed Monday to eliminate corruption in defense industry, describing such corruption as "an act benefitting the enemy."

"The defense industry corruption is not just a corruption, but an act benefitting the enemy that threatens national security," Moon said during a weekly meeting with his senior secretaries.

Moon said the elimination of the defense corruption was not a matter to determine who is liberal or conservative, but a matter to determine who is patriot or non-patriot, noting that the task could not be delayed any more.

His comments followed prosecutors' raid last week of the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the country's sole aircraft developer and manufacturer, over corruption allegations.

Separately from investigations by the prosecution office and the Board of Audit and Inspection into corruption in the defense industry, the government will need to improve institutions to prevent any further defense corruption from being repeated, the president said.

Moon, who took office on May 10, has instructed his aides to draw up measures to root out defense corruption, while ordering the restoration of the government-wide anti-corruption committee meeting that was first introduced in 2004 and was presided over by then President Roh Moo-hyun.
