Nearly 200 Democratic members of Congress are expected to file a lawsuit on Wednesday, accusing US President Donald Trump of violating the constitution by taking payments from foreign governments.

The plaintiffs encompass 196 Democratic lawmakers, led by Senator Richard Blumenthal. It is believed to be the most members ever to sue a sitting US president. No Republicans have joined the complaint so far.

The 37-page complaint, to be filed in federal court in Washington, DC, alleges the president violated the emoluments clause of the constitution by accepting gifts and benefits from foreign governments without "the consent of Congress."

"Trump has conflicts of interest in at least 25 countries, and it appears he’s using his presidency to maximize his profits," Representative John Coyers told Reuters.

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh (L) and Washington DC Attorney General Karl Racine spoke to the media about filing a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump on Monday.

The suit is the third of its kind since the president took office. On Monday, the attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia filed suit, claiming the president's financial links to the Trump business empire breach anti-corruption clauses.

However, Trump dismissed the allegations as "baseless" and his press secretary Sean Spicer said it was “not hard to conclude that partisan politics may be one of the motivations” behind the attorney generals' suit.
