Everton star and former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney joined the 200 Premier League goals club on Monday when he netted for the Toffees in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

In the all-time top 10 Premier League scorers list, Rooney and Jermain Defoe are the only footballers still playing.

The 31-year-old striker, who joined former England and Newcastle United player Alan Shearer in reaching the 200-goal landmark, said he was sure fans from his former club Manchester United would have enjoyed the milestone too.

Interestingly, Rooney scored his 50th, 150th and 200th Premier League goals against the same football club, his former football club’s city rival, Manchester City.

Rooney finished calmly to put Everton 1-0 up at the Etihad Stadium, his second goal in as many games in the top flight since rejoining his hometown club ahead of the current season.

Soon after the match, Rooney posted a tweet to share his excitement with his followers. Shearer and Rooney’s former teammates also posted tweets to congratulate the forward on the remarkable milestone.

Rooney’s lack of match time with Manchester United last season cost him his place in the England squad, but his early-season form means a recall could be on the cards.

“I am sure I will speak to England manager Gareth Southgate over the next few days and we will see what happens,” Rooney said in an interview with Sky Sports.
