(THE STAR ONLINE)Motorists in the city’s Golden Triangle area can expect traffic congestion during rush hour to get heavier in the coming days as regional and world leaders converge here for the 27th Asean Summit and related summits.

The temporary and gradual road closures here for the smooth movement of the leaders and delegates to the summit venue, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), may cause delay to some road users.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the authorities were giving top priority to ensuring the security of the world leaders arriving for the event.

He said extensive measures were being taken, especially after the recent terror attacks in Paris.

“If there’s any congestion around the KL area during the summit, I hope the public can tolerate it.

“Some protocol roads will have to be closed to accommodate the journey of the leaders to and from the venue,” he told reporters yesterday.

There was no major increase in the city’s morning and evening traffic crawl yesterday.

A check along the busy Jalan Tun Razak at both times showed congestion to be at normal level. The road is among the 12 affected by temporary closures.

The other affected roads are Jalan Binjai heading towards Persiaran KLCC, Jalan Imbi heading towards Bukit Bintang, Jalan Kia Peng heading towards Lorong Perak and Jalan Raja Chulan heading towards Lorong Perak.

Also affected are Jalan Nagasari to Jalan Raja Chulan, Jalan Sultan Ismail to Jalan Ampang, Jalan Ampang to Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Ampang to Jalan Binjai, Jalan Sultan Ismail to Jalan P. Ramlee and Jalan Raja Chulan to Persiaran Raja Chulan.

KL traffic police chief Asst Comm Mohd Nadzri Hussain said the 12 stretches would be fully closed from 7.15pm to 9pm on Saturday for the gala dinner hosted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The 12 roads will also be closed in stages from 7.40am to 9am from now until Sunday. Closures in the morning are to allow for the movement of leaders and delegates to KLCC.

ACP Mohd Nadzri advised motorists to use alternative roads – Jalan Kia Peng, Jalan Stonor, Lorong Lumba Kuda, Jalan Yap Kwan Seng, Jalan Hang Tuah and Jalan Pudu.
