The Christmas season is now upon us.

In Washington D.C., U.S. President Obarack Obama officially kicked off the Christmas tree at an elaborate holiday display.

Set up on the south front of the White House, small Christmas trees represent America's 50 states and its territories, and a huge National Christmas tree, are adorned with decorations and sparkling lights.

The president, first lady Michelle, and their daughters Sasha and Malia, along with an estimated 17 thousand who drew lots for tickets looking on, lighted the National Christmas tree.

But instead of the usual countdown from 10 to 1, the pouring rain prompted Obama to use his executive powers as the leader of the United States, and trim the count to only 5....

That move seemed to be appreciated by all those in the constant rainy downpour.

This year, there are 60 thousand super plum colored LED lights which use 80 percent less power than incandescent bulbs and on top, a star-shaped topper. It was wet and a bit cool, but it didn't dampen the spirits of the audience or the performers, like the Queen of Soul music, Aretha Franklin, and other top entertainers singing Christmas songs to a sea of umbrellas and a national audience on television.

The tradition of lighting a national Christmas tree goes back 91 years to 1923. It marks the time Americans prepare for the holiday.

Ahead on Christmas Day December 25th with gifts, family gatherings, and according to the National Christmas tree association, some 30 million lighted Christmas trees at homes all across the country.

President Obama spoke of the season placing special emphasis on the tributes still being paid around the world to South African late leader Nelson Mandela.
