Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Tuesday proposed a comprehensive peace vision for resolving the conflict with Israel in an address before the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In New York, Abbas proposed a multilateral peace mechanism, that does not include any involvement from the US. However, considering the long-term tension between the Israelites and Palestinians in the region, will his proposal work? "Neither Americans nor Israelites can accept this kind of proposal," said Zhou Rong, a senior analyst from Chongyang Institute for Financial Study at Renmin University of China in an exclusive interview by CGTN.

The shifted Policy

It seems that President Donald Trump shifted the policy in the Middle East, trying to get the peace process back on track. Zhou points out that although being objective is the prerequisite to developing the peace process between the Israelites and Palestinians, unless President Donald Trump gives up his decision to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, there would be no progress in regards to the peace process. According to Zhou, right now Abbas is managing to seek support from the international community against Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the legitimate capital city of Israel.

Multilateral peace mechanism

In Zhou's opinion, however, his proposal is far from enough to accomplish the goal of coping with the issue that has plagued the people in the region for more than 70 years. "Neither Americans nor Israelites can accept this kind of proposal," Zhou said. According to Zhou, the proposal itself might be more fair and beneficial to both Israelites and Palestinians, because it brings more opinions and voices to the issue. However, as the only mediator on the issue, the US is unwilling to share the cake with other participants, causing an impasse in the region.
