A total of 47 Chinese workers for a project contracted by an Indian company in Uganda have tested positive for the COVID-19, the Chinese embassy in Uganda said Saturday.

The embassy didn't specify when the Chinese workers tested positive, and said several of the 47 Chinese developed symptoms including fever, coughing, fatigue and diarrhea, while others are currently asymptomatic.

The embassy said it had contacted the Indian company to provide necessary support for the Chinese employees and protect their safety and health.

Uganda has been reporting about 2,000 new COVID-19 cases per week, as multiple government departments and hospitals have reported cluster infections, said the embassy. It urges local Chinese to be cautious and refrain from social gatherings.
