China protests possible US-Taiwan military exchanges

China has expressed strong opposition to the US government after President Donald Trump signed into law an act laying the groundwork for possible military exchanges between the US and Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang said on Thursday that the Chinese mainland urged the US to abide by the one-China policy and the three China-US joint communiques, and handle the Taiwan issue cautiously.

On Tuesday, Trump signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for the 2018 fiscal year, which authorizes the possibility of mutual visits by navy vessels between Taiwan and the US.

Lu said although Taiwan-related sections of the law were not legally binding, they seriously violate the one-China policy and "constitute interference in China’s internal affairs".

He reiterated China is firmly opposed to any official exchanges or military exchanges between the US and Taiwan.
