Some 50 people were injured early Thursday when six compartments and the locomotive of a passenger train veered off the tracks in northeastern Bangladesh as miscreants removed several fish-plates.

An official of Government Railway Police told Xinhua that the railway communications between Dhaka and northeastern Sylhet division city, some 241 km northeast of capital Dhaka, also came to a halt for hours due to the derailment.

"Some 50 passengers were injured in the accident," said the official who preferred not to be named.

He blamed the pro-blockade supporters for the accident.

An opposition party spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

The blockade triggered huge clashes between protesters and police in parts of capital Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.

Ex-Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who remained cordoned off inside her office since Saturday night, has announced indefinite blockade across the country from Tuesday.
