US beef to return to Chinese market after 14 years

Final details are in place to allow the US to resume beef shipments to China, US officials said on Monday, allowing companies to prepare for their first sales in 14 years, according to Reuters.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said all beef to be exported to China must be tracked with the birthplace of cattle born in the US.

In another rule, the exported beef must come from cattle less than 30 months old and should not contain growth promotant ractopamine, according to the USDA.

China has banned the US beef since 2003 due to mad cow disease. Washington and Beijing have finalized details on export protocols before shipments begin by mid-July.
