5 policemen killed in fresh attack in Afghanistan

Five police personnel were killed and four others wounded after Taliban militants attacked security checkpoints in Afghanistan's eastern province of Ghazni overnight, provincial police chief said Sunday.

"Unknown number of militants stormed police checkpoints Saturday night in Qala-e-Qazi and Khak-e-Ghariban localities on outskirts of provincial capital Ghazni city. The clashes left five police killed and four others wounded," police chief Mohammad Zaman told Xinhua.

Additional security forces arrived in the targeted posts after the gunfight in the province, 120 km south of Kabul.

The province has been the scene of clashes between security forces and militants.

Several Taliban militants were also killed and wounded during the gun battle, but their number could not be specified as the militants evacuated their casualties.

Taliban militant group has intensified activities as spring and summer known as fighting season is drawing near in the country.
