Nigeria nabs 109 drug trafficking suspects in southern state

The Nigerian government on Tuesday said it apprehended 109 persons for trafficking illicit drug in the third quarter of 2015 in southern Edo state.

State commander for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Buba Wakawa, disclosed this in Benin, the state capital, saying the arrested suspects were 81 males and 28 female.

He also said the agency secured conviction of two suspects within the period, adding that 30 cases were still in court.

He said 3, 428.8 kilograms of substance suspected to cannabis sativa otherwise known as Indian hemp and 36.2 grams of substance suspected to be cocaine were seized in the state during the period.

Wakawa added that about 40 grams of suspected psychotropic substances were also seized.

The commander disclosed that 19 farmlands measuring 44,000 hectares in parts of the state were destroyed for cultivating suspected cannabis plant. Enditem
