Myanmar's election commission announces 1st series of election result

Myanmar's Union Election Commission (UEC) on Monday released the first series of the result of the general election held on Sunday following the opening of the election results center in Nay Pyi Taw.

According to the first series of the result, candidates from the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) have won 12 seats at the House of Representatives (Lower House) so far from their respective constituencies in Yangon region.

Besides, NLD candidates won three seats at the region parliament, while the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) won one seat in the same category, bringing the total result so far to 12 seats of the House of Representatives secured by the NLD, three seats of the Region Parliament by the NLD and one seat by the USDP.

The remaining result will be successively announced by the commission six times daily until completion, UEC Chairman U Tin Aye told the center during the opening ceremony.

In an interview with Xinhua, Spokesman of the National League for Democracy U Win Htein said the party won most of the parliamentary seats in Sunday's general election, estimated at more than 70 percent of the total nationwide.

In a separate interview with Xinhua, U Aung Naing Tun, director-general of the Administration Department of the ruling USDP, said the party won less number of the parliamentary seats with less chance for winning.

Both parties said the result is yet to be confirmed by the election commission.

A total of 6,038 candidates involving 91 political parties and 310 independent runners competed for more than 1,000 seats at three levels of the parliament in the election.

Of the total, 1,733 candidates ran for seats of the House of Representatives (Lower House), 886 for the House of Nationalities (Upper House), and 3,419 for Region or State Parliament.
