Top 1 | China rises to 11th in Global Innovation Index 2022

China rose to 11th on the Global Innovation Index 2022, up from 12th last year, according to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on Thursday.

Switzerland, the United States, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands rounded out the top five, said the WIPO report.

China has stepped up efforts in recent years to transform itself into an intellectual property powerhouse. China, which ranked 34th a decade ago, is now on the verge of entering the top 10. It's a result of unremitting efforts, said Daren Tang, director general of the WIPO.


Top 2 | All delegates to the 20th CPC National Congress elected

A total of 2,296 delegates were elected to attend the upcoming 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), according to an official statement released Sunday.

The 20th CPC National Congress has been proposed to be convened on October 16 in Beijing.

The eligibility of the delegates will be verified by a special review committee before they attend the upcoming congress, according to the statement.


Top 3 | Italy's right wing, led by Meloni, wins election: provisional results

A right-wing alliance led by Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party is on course for a clear majority in the next parliament, giving the country its most right-wing government since World War II.

Meloni, as leader of the largest coalition party, is also likely to become Italy's first woman prime minister.

Meloni, 45, has pledged to support Western policy on Ukraine and not take undue risks with the third largest economy in the euro zone. As results started to become clear she told reporters in Rome that she wished to govern for all Italians.

Policy makers in Italy are trying to allay economic concerns about the country's political shift, insisting that a strong majority enjoyed by a democratically elected government is good news for international markets.

As expected, Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party, alongside her right-wing allies Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi, received the majority in both houses of parliament.

There has been much international apprehension about the change in political direction. However, Professor of European Union Policy at Luiss University, Luciano Monti, believes the new government can offer the stability needed to address the country's financial challenges.


Top 6 | Putin grants Edward Snowden Russian citizenship

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Monday granting Russian citizenship to former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Snowden, who revealed in 2013 that the U.S. government had been spying on the email and cell phone communications of as many as 35 world leaders, including then German Chancellor Angela Merkel, is one of the more than 70 foreign citizens granted Russian citizenship.

Snowden, 39, who is wanted by the United States on charges of espionage and theft of government property, has been taking refuge in Russia since 2013 and received a permanent residency permit in the country in October 2020.


Top 7 | UN chief calls for all-out efforts to eliminate nuclear threat

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday called for the use of every means to eliminate the nuclear threat.

Guterres made the appeal at a UN General Assembly high-level meeting to commemorate and promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, which falls on September 26.

In late August, the 10th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons failed to result in the adoption of an outcome document.


Top 8 | Chinese FM: China supports the UN's central role in intl affairs

China firmly supports the purposes and principles of the United Nations (UN) Charter, the UN's central role in international affairs, the important role of the UN General Assembly in addressing global challenges, and the work of the President of the UN General Assembly, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Saturday during his meeting with UN General Assembly President Csaba Korosi.

Wang met with Korosi on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

China is willing to strengthen its connection with the UN to help achieve the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, said Wang.

At their annual conference, Labour lawmakers are sensing a change in their fortunes after a punishing loss at a 2019 election, feeling they can now offer a real choice to voters after the government announced a "growth plan" that handed tax cuts mostly to big business and the wealthiest.

The so-called mini-budget has opened up a divide between Prime Minister Liz Truss's Conservatives and the Labour Party of Keir Starmer, who wants to use the years before an expected election in 2024 to prove his team is ready for power.


Top 10 | DPRK fires short-range ballistic missile eastward: ROK

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has fired a short-range ballistic missile into its eastern waters, the Republic of Korea's (ROK) Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Sunday.

The JCS said in a statement that it detected the launch from an area in or around Taechon, North Pyongan province, at 6:53 a.m. local time.

The ROK was maintaining a full readiness posture in close cooperation with the United States while strengthening surveillance and vigilance, the JCS added.

Sunday's missile launch came two days after a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier arrived in Busan, about 390 km southeast of ROK capital Seoul, for combined drills with the ROK's navy scheduled to take place later this month.
