Sri Lanka is in the process of selecting a new president to complete the remaining term left from the former president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the country and resigned after huge protests over the country’s economic collapse. His resignation marks a turning point in the history of the nation that the Rajapaksas controlled with for the majority of the previous two decades before losing the support of their once-fervent subjects.

The interim president will serve until 2024 and could possibly appoint a new prime minister.

The nominations for the new president’s election will be heard on Tuesday, according to Dhammika Dasanayake, secretary general of the parliament, and if there are many candidates, MPs will vote on Wednesday.
