The death toll in Indian-controlled Kashmir bus accident has risen to 10, police said Friday.

The ill-fated bus with 46 people on board Thursday skidded off a mountainous road and fell into a gorge at Lambai in Rajouri district, about 180 km southwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"In yesterday's tragic accident here the death toll has risen to 10," a senior police official posted in Rajouri said. "Six persons were killed on the spot, while four others succumbed on the way to hospitals."

Police said 36 people were injured in the accident, of which 14 were shifted to the main hospital in Jammu city, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, while others were being treated at a local hospital.

According to police, investigations revealed the overloaded bus was being recklessly driven and trying to overtake other vehicles on the road.

The bus was carrying local passengers from the adjacent Poonch district to Jammu.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
